Applications of 20-Foot Double-Wing Expandable Containers in Remote Construction Sites
For projects such as mining sites, utility tunnels, wind turbine foundations, and border inspection posts—which are characterized by “few people, remote locations, and short duration”—the biggest concern is that temporary housing units may be difficult to assemble upon arrival or dismantle when it’s time to leave. The 20-foot double-wing expandable container minimizes this problem: the container itself weighs approximately 2.8 metric tons, so it can be positioned using a standard crane; with a folded width of 2.2 meters, it can travel on rural roads and pass through width-restricted barriers without requiring special permits for oversized loads, making it better suited for sites with poor road conditions than 30- or 40-foot containers.


When unfolded, it offers approximately 37 square meters of space, which can be reliably configured as “1 bedroom + 1 bathroom + 1 small living/office area.” It’s spacious enough for two people to sleep comfortably and serves as a suitable on-site office for a foreman or supervisor. Rock wool or PU sandwich panels provide both Class A fire resistance and thermal insulation, making the unit habitable in temperatures ranging from -30°C to 50°C; The hinges and guide rails have undergone repeated opening and closing tests, allowing the unit to be set up or folded away in just over ten minutes. The entire unit can be moved as a set when relocating between project sites, ensuring high reusability.

Compared to color-coated steel panel units, which suffer from significant wear and tear from repeated assembly and disassembly and are prone to leaks and peeling, the 20-foot double-wing container functions more like a “mobile small house”—a one-time investment that can be rotated between multiple small project sections, making it the most cost-effective option among small-scale temporary structures.
